Getting Started

Without exception, all players will be required to submit a background for their character as well as a completely legal character sheet to accompany it. It benefits you as a player to read the few House Rules that we have, and seek clarification for topics you do not understand prior to submitting your character sheet. The Storyteller Staff will not reject a legally created character that will add to the environment of the game. Difficulties during character approval are just as frustrating for you as they are for the Staff. Please keep in mind we don't hate you, and want your character to get approved as painlessly as possible.

Before you can begin creating a character sheet, you will need to register on PuppetPrince.com and join the Silver Spur chronicle: http://www.puppetprince.com/chronicles/961-the-silver-spur

And request a sheet from the ST (to keep you from having to do all the typing in of information).

Now, before we go further... each player will be allowed only two characters total. **There is a possibility for the ST to give out NPC's for SL's and Mega Plots. Should this happen, direction and the character will be discussed between the player and ST.**

All character will initially begin creation at 0 experience. Your two characters (if you choose to create them) will be eligible to receive higher experience based on the background that accompanies them, and other criteria if applicable.

For a character sheet, you will need to register on www.puppetprince.com and ask the ST for a sheet. You will notice that there is not a TableTop sheet available, however one will be created for you and sent to your username. Be sure to join the Silver Spur chronicle on Puppet Prince here: http://www.puppetprince.com/chronicles/961-the-silver-spur . At the bottom of this guide, you will find an example sheet. Please keep the following things in mind:

1. Do NOT put your freebies on the sheet. Please list them in the alloted "Notes" section of the sheet.
2. DO NOT spend your XP before the ST can review your bio. XP will be awarded to your sheet on Puppet Prince based on your  bio. Remember that bonus xp can be earned but is not guaranteed.
3. Put your bio in a journal entry on your character sheet. If you cannot find how to access the journal on your character sheet, ask the ST and we will help you out.
4. Utilize your journal. Put character notes, blurbs, whatever you want in there. You can create as many entries as you want. That is there not only for your benefit but the ST's as well.

Character Creation Step by Step

Character Name:
This is a relatively simple selection in which you can be as creative as you like. However, names like Dracula, Lestat, Bill Compton and any other annoyingly commercial Kindred names will be rejected by the Staff.

Character Concept:
Character Concept is often an overlooked and underdeveloped part of all characters. A Character Concept should be one or two words that identify exactly what and who your character is. Before you even read the character background, the Character Concept should prepare you for the type of person you are about to meet. Please be original. If your character avatar is a world famous gambler, do not use "world famous gambler" as your concept.

Character Type:
At present, The Silver Spur allows only Kindred characters to be played.

Clan:
Below is the list of clans approved in The Silver Spur:

Caitiff - OPEN
Brujah - OPEN
Gangrel - OPEN
Malkavian - OPEN
Nosferatu - OPEN
Toreador - OPEN
Tremere - OPEN
Ventrue - OPEN

Nature & Demeanor:
Nature: What you are inside
Demeanor: What you present to everyone around you.

A list of all Nature & Demeanor selections can be located in the Core Vampire the Masquerade Rulebook. Select carefully, some Natures and Demeanors fit very well together and others are nearly impossible to play.

Attributes [7/5/3]:
Attributes are traits which measure a character's innate capabilities in both the Storyteller and Storytelling systems. They are separated into one of three main categories (Physical, Social, and Mental) and alongside Abilities are often combined to form dice pools.

A character must select which group of Attributes the character is strong (Primary). The player then selects the group which they are average (Secondary). Finally, the remaining group is designated as the character's weak point (Tertiary). All characters begin with one dot in each category of Attributes. They then distribute seven additional dots to their primary group, five additional dots to the secondary group, and three dots to the tertiary group.
*NOTE* PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE SHEET YOU ARE GIVEN. THINGS HAVE BEEN CHANGED TO SUIT THE SETTING AND PERIOD OF THE GAME.

Abilities [13/9/5]:
Abilities are traits that represent a character's acquired capabilities. Typically an ability rating would be combined with an Attribute rating, representing the character's natural prowess and learned skill coming together to perform an action. Like Attributes, Abilities are rated from 0 to 5. Attempting to perform an action that requires an Ability one does not have imposes an additional penalty on that action, as a rating of zero indicates no familiarity with the given Ability.
Talents - things for which the character has discovered an intuitive knack (like performance or subterfuge)
Skills - things the character has learned to do (like drive a car or fire a gun)
Knowledges - areas of scholastic or mental expertise (like science or law)
A character must select which group of Abilities the character is strong (Primary). The player then selects the group which they are average (Secondary). Finally, the remaining group is designated as the character's weak point (Tertiary). They then distribute thirteen dots to their primary group, nine dots to the secondary group, and five dots to the tertiary group. *NOTE* PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE SHEET YOU ARE GIVEN. THINGS HAVE BEEN CHANGED TO SUIT THE SETTING AND PERIOD OF THE GAME.

Secondary Abilities:
Please speak to a Staff member  to discuss Secondary Abilities prior to submitting your character. Often a Primary Ability will suffice in our setting and Secondary Abilities will not be utilized to their fullest intended capacity.

Disciplines [3]:
Choose your 3 Disciplines aligned with your chosen Clan.

A Discipline is the term used for one of the supernatural powers of Cainites. The origin of the Disciplines is unknown, but many believe they are gifts from Caine or Lilith, and a few Antediluvians are thought to have invented unique Disciplines that have been passed down through their childer. There are seventeen "main" Disciplines that are well known and relatively common, but there are also a variety of much rarer Disciplines practiced by bloodlines and Thin-Blooded vampires.

Aside from their immortality, ability to heal, and ability to improve their physical capabilities through expenditure of vitae, the Disciplines are what grant Cainites their supernatural power and enable them to participate in the Jyhad. Training in each Discipline provides several related powers such as superhuman senses, shapeshifting abilities or influence over the minds of others.

Backgrounds [5]:
Choose Backgrounds.

A Background is a special trait used in the Storyteller System used to represent elements of a character's history or backstory. They establish a character's social status, history, or special tools that don't fall under the sway of supernatural powers such as Disciplines, Gifts, Arcanoi, etc.

Like other traits, characters can purchase Backgrounds with experience points in the course of a chronicle, though some were restricted, either available only at character creation or through in-character actions.

Virtues [3]:
Rate your Virtues by adding a total of 7 points across the three Virtues..

Your character automatically has one dot in each Virtue.

Finishing Calculation
It is necessary to record the Humanity, Willpower, and Blood Pool calculations, please be aware of them.

Humanity = Conscience + Self-Control
Willpower = Courage
Blood Pool is correlated to your generation.

Freebie Points
Spend 15 Freebie Points.

Merits and Flaws may also be listed under this section. Only seven points worth of flaws return Freebie Points. Merits and Flaws must be fitting for your character or concept. Please note that some merits and flaws will not be allowed, although there are exceptions. Talk to an ST if you are choosing a merit or flaw that you feel may not be allowed. Please list spends in the notes section of your character sheet using examples below...

Strength 2 - 5fb
Drive 1 - 2fb
Humanity 6 - 2fb

Discipline/Path-10 per dot
Attributes-5 per dot
Abilities-2 per dot
Virtues-1 per dot
Willpower-1 per dot
Humanity/Path-1 per dot
Backgrounds-1 per dot

Increasing a virtue with freebies or experience does not increase the traits based on it (i.e. Willpower and Humanity).

Experience Points
Spend applicable Experience Points.

Your experience is determined by the quality and depth of your background and the character slot you've chosen for this particular character. If you are unsure that your background fulfills the necessary requirements for the experience slot, please and speak with a member of the Staff. Please list spends on a new journal entry of your character sheet so there is always a log of your spends (As puppet prince doesn't show all spends in the xp log and spends can/will get lost/missed) using examples below...

Strength 3 - 12xp
Drive 2 - 4xp
Humanity 6 - 12xp

Experience Costs:

New ability - 3
New Discipline - 10
New Thaumaturgy path - 7
In-Clan Discipline - Current Rating x5
Non-Clan Discipline - Current Rating x7
Thaumaturgy Path - Current Rating x4
Caitiff disciplines - Current Rating x6
Ability - Current Rating x2
Attribute - Current Rating x4
Humanity - Current Rating x2
Virtue - Current Rating x2
Willpower - Current Rating

Increasing a virtue with freebies or experience does not increase the traits based on it (i.e. Willpower and Humanity).

Submitting your character:
In the notes section, put a link to your character picture(s). No cartoons or drawings will be accepted for character pictures. Please choose a realistic picture of your character to put on the site. Submit your character to the Silver Spur chronicle on Puppet Prince and let an ST know that you're awaiting approval.

Culture:
You're versed in the culture and ethnic ways of the warwardnesses a frontier traveler may encounter. Culture includes how particular groups fit in the weave of society. You know the history of peoples in the west, especially how one group gets along (or not) with another. Culture's what a seasoned soul falls back on, both when she finds herself among kinds of folks she's met before, and when she meets some new bunch.

Enigmas:
This ability concerns solving mysteries and puzzles. In essence, it is a measurement of your problem-solving skills and how well you combine scattered details into a coherent solutions. Enigmas comes in handy when solving mazes, answering riddles and the like. This ability is used with mental challenges in order to see if you fire out a problem set before you.

Larceny:
Larceny is the talent for living on the lawless side. You make your way by crooked means, and you're comfortable around folks who do likewise. You know where the outlaws are to be found, you know the lingo once you get there and you know who's safe to cross and who ain't.

Ride:
You can ride a horse, and may be able to handle some wagons and buggies, too. Having a Ride rating doesn't make you an expert on all animals, or with all conveyances. Your difficulty may be raised or lowered depending on the extent of your experience with one breed or one kind of contraption.

Lores (Thank you Alex)

Everyone starts off with the following Lores (That you will list in the Viniculi column):

Kindred 1
Clan 1
Camarilla 1

Anything beyond this will have to be purchased.
